In 2007, ESEE Knives (formerly RAT Cutlery)—founded by survival experts Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin after Peruvian jungle training—transitioned from Ontario Knife Co. collaborations to independent production via Rowen Manufacturing in Idaho. The ESEE-3 (model ESEE-3) debuted as the foundational model, evolving directly from the RAT-3 (designed for OKC ~2002–2007). It became ESEE's first in-house flagship: a compact 3.5-inch drop-point blade in tough 1095 high-carbon steel (powder-coated, full-flat grind) for exceptional toughness, batoning, and easy sharpening. Weighing ~5.2 oz with 8.13-inch overall length, it features full-tang construction, canvas Micarta handles, and versatile sheath options—ideal for survival knives, bushcraft, and EDC fixed blades

The ESEE-4 followed shortly after (~2008–2009) as the larger sibling, offering a 4.5-inch blade (4.1-inch cutting edge, .188" thick) in the same 1095 steel for balanced toughness and cutting efficiency. Weighing ~8 oz with 9-inch overall length, its finger choil, hammer pommel, and ergonomic design made it a do-all workhorse—praised as the "modern field knife" for heavy tasks, military/law enforcement use, and versatility

Both models earned legendary status for unbreakable durability, USA-made quality, and ESEE's no-questions-asked lifetime warranty. Later upgrades included S35VN variants (~2010s), 3D-milled handles, and handle-modified (HM) options—solidifying the ESEE-3/4 as benchmarks in survival knives and tactical fixed blades
