The Illuminati was a real secret society founded on May 1, 1776, in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of canon law. Officially named the Order of the Illuminati (Bund der Perfektibilisten), it aimed to promote Enlightenment ideals: reason, secularism, equality, and opposition to superstition, religious influence in public life, and abuses of state power

At its peak, the group had ~2,000 members across Europe, including intellectuals, nobles, and Freemasons. It used pseudonyms, ciphers, and strict hierarchy (Novice → Minerval → Illuminated Minerval → Illuminatus Minor → etc.). The Bavarian government banned it in 1785, seized documents, and dissolved the order by 1787
