George Castriot (Gjergj Kastrioti), known as Skanderbeg ("Lord Alexander"), is Albania's national hero. Born around 1405 into a noble Albanian family, he was taken hostage by the Ottomans as a child and trained in their military elite, earning the name Iskender Bey

In 1443, he rebelled against the Ottomans, raised the red-and-black double-headed eagle banner, and united Albanian clans. For 25 years (1443–1468), he led a fierce guerrilla resistance, defeating Ottoman armies in over 25 battles and defending Kruja castle

Skanderbeg's victories delayed Ottoman expansion into Europe for decades. He died of malaria in 1468; his helmet and sword are preserved in Vienna. Today, he symbolizes Albanian independence, courage, and identity
