Found across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, black widows prefer dark, undisturbed spots like woodpiles, sheds, and basements. Their neurotoxic venom causes severe muscle pain, cramps, sweating, nausea, and—in rare cases—medical emergencies, though fatalities are extremely uncommon with prompt treatment. The name "black widow" stems from the female's habit of sometimes eating the male after mating.
