Oni (鬼) are fearsome yōkai — ogre-like demons — in Japanese mythology and folklore. Originating from ancient beliefs blended with Buddhist and Chinese influences (introduced around the 6th century), oni were once linked to vengeful spirits of the dead, hidden mountain entities, or guardians of hell (Jigoku)
Typically depicted as giant, muscular figures with red or blue skin, horns, fangs, and wielding iron clubs (kanabō), oni embody superhuman strength, chaos, and calamity — bringing disease, disasters, or punishing sinners
In Japanese culture, oni represent both terror and protection. They appear as antagonists in legends like Momotarō and Shuten-dōji, yet Setsubun festivals drive them away with beans ("Oni wa soto!"). Today, oni symbols guard shrines or appear in anime, games, and art, blending fear with playful charm
