Spyderco Sage 5 handle scales
The Spyderco Sage 5 (model C123, often called Sage 5) is the most popular member of Spyderco's innovative Sage Series, which celebrates folding knife lock mechanisms and their inventors
The Sage project began in 2008 with the Sage 1 (Michael Walker's liner lock), followed by variants honoring Chris Reeve (Sage 2 frame lock), Blackie Collins (Sage 3 bolt action), and others. After years of fan requests to feature Spyderco's own Compression Lock—pioneered on the Para Military in 2004—Spyderco "looked inward" for the fifth iteration
Designed by founder Sal Glesser, the Sage 5 launched in 2016 (first expressions shipped mid-2016, with reviews and videos appearing that year). It combines the series' consistent 3" full-flat-ground CPM S30V leaf-shaped blade, ergonomic handle with finger choil and thumb ramp, and reversible tip-up clip, but showcases the Compression Lock in a refined, mid-sized EDC format
Initial release featured skeletonized stainless liners nested in textured carbon fiber/G-10 laminate scales for strength and aesthetics. It quickly became a benchmark for smooth action, rock-solid lockup, and perfect balance—earning praise as one of Spyderco's finest all-around folders
Later variants expanded appeal: Lightweight FRN scales (2019+), elite steels like Maxamet, CPM SPY27, REX 121, and sprint runs, solidifying the Sage 5 as a flagship Compression Lock EDC
