The Spyderco Para Military 2 (often called PM2 or Paramilitary 2) is one of the most iconic and best-selling folding knives ever made
Its story begins with the original Military model, designed by Spyderco founder Sal Glesser in 1996 as the ultimate tool for forward-deployed military personnel—lightweight, reliable, with a full-flat grind and early CPM steel
In 2004, Spyderco released the first-generation ParaMilitary (C81), shrinking the Military slightly for better everyday carry while introducing the innovative Compression Lock (safer and finger-friendly) and premium CPM S30V steel
Driven by Spyderco's philosophy of Constant Quality Improvement (C.Q.I.), feedback led to major refinements. The Para Military 2 launched in 2010, featuring:
- Narrower, more ergonomic G-10 scales
- Thinner profile for smoother carry
- Lengthened blade tip and enhanced jimping on spine/choil
- 4-way reversible pocket clip
- Bushing pivot for smoother action
Retaining the proven CPM S30V full-flat blade and Compression Lock, the PM2 became a benchmark for tactical folders, spawning countless variants (including sprint runs with steels like S90V, MagnaCut, and Maxamet)
Over a decade later, it remains Spyderco's flagship EDC, blending heritage, performance, and user-driven evolution
