Debuting in 2005 (early catalog listings and dealer availability mid-2005), the Ontario RAT-3 was designed for users wanting a blade larger than the RAT-2 but more compact and concealable than the RAT-1—perfect for everyday carry (EDC), tactical backup, and field utility without excess bulk
The Ontario RAT-3 features a 3.5-inch drop-point blade in rugged 1095 carbon steel (powder-coated for corrosion resistance), a secure liner lock, textured Zytel handles with index finger groove, ambidextrous thumb studs, 4-way reversible pocket clip, and jimping for secure grip—weighing ~4 oz with 7.5-inch overall length. Ideal for tactical EDC knives, survival folders, and hard use
Priced affordably (~$55–$85 MSRP), it quickly became a favorite for its balanced size, proven toughness, and value—earning cult status in the RAT family. Variants (plain/serrated, colors, G-10 scales) followed. After the 2007 RAT/ESEE split, Ontario continued producing the RAT-3 until the mid-2010s discontinuation.
