Leatherman, the iconic American brand of multi-tools and pocket tools, was founded in 1983 by Tim Leatherman in Portland, Oregon
In 1975, while traveling through Europe with his wife, Tim’s cheap pocket knife broke, leaving him frustrated with inadequate tools. The idea struck him: why not combine a pair of pliers with other useful tools into one compact device?
Over the next eight years (1975–1983), Tim built more than 30 prototypes in his garage, refining the design, improving durability, and adding features. He patented the first multi-tool concept and faced countless rejections from manufacturers who didn’t believe in the product
In 1983, unable to sell the idea, Tim decided to manufacture it himself. He founded Leatherman Tool Group and launched the PST (Pocket Survival Tool) — the world’s first modern multi-tool with pliers, knife, screwdrivers, and more
The PST quickly gained legendary status among outdoorsmen, mechanics, and military users. By the 1990s, Leatherman became the most recognized name in multi-tools worldwide, with models like Super Tool, Wave, Signal, Rebar, and Arc setting industry standards
Today, Leatherman remains family-owned, Made in USA, and synonymous with durability, innovation, and versatility in multi-tools, EDC tools, survival tools, and tactical pocket tools — trusted by millions globally
