Ka-Bar TDI Law Enforcement Large handle scales
In 2005–2006, John Benner—33-year veteran police lieutenant, U.S. Army MP, and founder of the Tactical Defense Institute (TDI)—expanded his popular TDI Law Enforcement series with the Large TDI (model KA1482) to meet demand for a bigger, more capable version of the compact original
While the standard TDI (KA1480/KA1481) excelled in ultra-concealed carry and weapons retention under stress, officers requested a larger blade for added reach, cutting power, and versatility in tactical scenarios. Benner scaled up the low-profile, gross-motor design, maintaining the intuitive, no-fine-motor-skill-needed ergonomics
Ka-Bar partnered with Benner to produce the Ka-Bar TDI Large Law Enforcement KA1482 (plain edge) and KA1483 (serrated) around 2006–2007 (early catalog appearances and dealer availability noted 2007). The KA1482 features a 3.625-inch blade in AUS-8A stainless steel (black-coated), weighing ~4.8 oz with 7.625-inch overall length, textured Zytel handle, and ambidextrous polymer sheath with reversible belt clip and MOLLE compatibility—ideal for law enforcement knives, tactical fixed blades, self-defense knives, and larger-hand users
Priced ~$80–$100 MSRP (Taiwan-made), it earned praise for enhanced cutting/slicing capability while preserving the series' concealment and reliability. Variants (serrated KA1483, half-serrated) followed, solidifying the Large TDI as a benchmark in oversized concealed carry knives and Ka-Bar's TDI legacy for practical, stress-tested defense tools
The scales are compatible with various modifications of the TDI Law Enforcement Large model:
