Hinderer Knives, a legendary American custom and production knife brand, was founded in 1996 by Rick Hinderer in Central Florida, USA. A lifelong knife enthusiast and machinist, Rick began crafting custom folders in the early 1990s after years of tinkering and self-taught knifemaking. His breakthrough came in 1998 when he introduced the XM-18 (eXtreme Military-18), a titanium-framed tactical folder with his patented Lockbar Stabilizer—a steel bar that eliminates lockbar flex under extreme lateral pressure, setting a new standard for rock-solid reliability
The XM-18 exploded in popularity among military, law enforcement, and hardcore users for its overbuilt construction, ambidextrous design, and premium materials (CPM-S30V, later S35VN, M390, Maxamet). In 2005, Rick relocated to Plant City, Florida, expanding his shop and introducing iconic models like the Eklipse, Halftrack, Battle Mistress, and XM-24 fixed blade
Hinderer pioneered "battle-grade" titanium frames, deep-carry clips, and aggressive texturing. By the 2010s, limited-edition runs and collaborations (e.g., with BladeHQ, KnifeCenter) created massive demand—often selling out in minutes. In 2018, Rick launched the "Invest" program for collectors, offering serialized XM-18 variants
Today, Hinderer Knives remains family-operated, synonymous with uncompromising toughness, innovative locks, and premium American craftsmanship in tactical EDC knives, custom folders, and hard-use blades—trusted by professionals and enthusiasts worldwide
