Style features

The Crown of Thorns (Latin: Corona Spinarum) is one of Christianity's most revered relics, placed on Jesus' head by Roman soldiers to mock His claim as "King of the Jews" (Matthew 27:29, John 19:2-5). Twisted from thorny branches, it caused intense pain while symbolizing both suffering and ironic royalty

Historically, the relic traveled from Jerusalem to Constantinople, then to France in 1239 when King Louis IX purchased it from the debt-ridden Latin Emperor of Constantinople. He built the stunning Sainte-Chapelle to house it. Preserved in Notre-Dame Cathedral since the 19th century, it survived the 2019 fire thanks to heroic rescue

Symbolically, thorns recall the Genesis curse on the ground after Adam's sin (Genesis 3:17-18); Jesus wore them to redeem humanity from that curse (Galatians 3:13). Some traditions link it to Euphorbia milii (a spiny Madagascar plant), though unlikely the exact species. Today, it represents sacrifice, kingship, and ultimate victory over sin—crowned in glory after the cross (Hebrews 2:9)
