Style features

The Crucifixion of Jesus remains one of history's most pivotal events, central to Christianity. Occurring around AD 30–33 under Roman governor Pontius Pilate, Jesus was executed at Golgotha ("Place of the Skull") outside Jerusalem. Roman crucifixion, a brutal punishment for slaves and rebels, involved severe flogging with a whip embedded with metal balls and bone shards, causing massive blood loss and shock before nailing

Victims carried the crossbeam (patibulum) to the site, where wrists—not palms—were nailed (to support body weight), and feet to the upright. Death came slowly via asphyxiation, shock, and exposure, often after hours; Jesus hung about six hours, dying around 3 p.m. A sign above read "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" in three languages

The Gospels note an earthquake, darkness, and a spear thrust producing blood and water. This method maximized pain and public humiliation—yet became the ultimate symbol of sacrifice and redemption
