In 2002, Benchmade expanded the revolutionary Griptilian lineup—launched in 2001—by introducing the compact Mini Griptilian models: the 555 (modified sheepsfoot blade with thumb hole) and 556 (drop-point blade with thumb studs). Designed by Mel Pardue, these downsized versions brought the patented ambidextrous AXIS Lock to a more pocketable EDC format, targeting users seeking lightweight reliability without sacrificing performance
The Benchmade Mini Griptilian 555 / 556 feature a 2.91-inch blade in premium 154CM stainless steel (later upgraded to CPM-S30V in many variants) for excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance. Weighing just 2.56–2.9 oz, they use durable Grivory handles, reversible tip-up pocket clip, and one-hand deployment—ideal for everyday carry (EDC), outdoor tasks, and discreet use
Debuting shortly after the full-size 550/551, the minis quickly became fan favorites for their slim profile, ergonomic grip, and legendary AXIS strength. In 2016, premium updates like the 555-1 / 556-1 added G-10 scales, CPM-20CV steel, and deep-carry clips, while 2019 brought flat grinds and further refinements. The 555/556 remain timeless benchmarks in mini EDC knives, blending portability with Benchmade quality
