Benchmade Griptilian 550 handle scales
In 2001, Benchmade introduced the Griptilian series, revolutionizing EDC folders with the iconic AXIS Lock. Designed by renowned knifemaker Mel Pardue, the Griptilian 550 (sheepsfoot blade with thumb hole) and 551 (modified drop-point with thumb studs) debuted as versatile, ambidextrous workhorses built on the patented AXIS mechanism by McHenry & Williams—offering unmatched strength, smooth operation, and true one-hand use for right- and left-handers
The Benchmade Griptilian 550/551 features a 3.45-inch blade in premium 154CM stainless steel (later upgraded to S30V and other steels) for excellent edge retention, corrosion resistance, and toughness. Lightweight Noryl GTX (Grivory) handles provide ergonomic grip and durability, with reversible tip-up pocket clip and textured scales for secure hold during heavy tasks
Quickly becoming a bestseller and modern classic, the Griptilian series earned praise for its balance of performance, affordability, and reliability—ideal for everyday carry (EDC), outdoor adventures, and work. Variants like the 551-1 G-10 (2015) followed, but the original 550/551 set the standard for AXIS Lock EDC knives, remaining a Benchmade staple for over two decades
The scales are compatible with various modifications of the Griptilian 550 model:
- Benchmade Griptilian 550
- Benchmade Griptilian 551
