In 2015, Benchmade responded to years of community demand by upgrading the iconic Griptilian series with premium G-10 handles, releasing the 550-1 (sheepsfoot blade with thumb hole) and 551-1 (drop-point with thumb studs). These models marked a significant evolution from the original 2001 Grivory/Noryl GTX scales, offering enhanced durability, textured grip, and a more premium feel for heavy-duty EDC and tactical use
The Benchmade Griptilian 550-1 / 551-1 feature a 3.45-inch blade in super-premium CPM-20CV stainless steel (later variants used S30V/M4) for exceptional edge retention, corrosion resistance, and toughness. Weighing about 4.17 oz, they retain the ambidextrous AXIS Lock, reversible pocket clip, and one-hand operation while adding anodized barrel spacers for refined aesthetics
Around the same period, Benchmade expanded customization with the Custom Griptilian CU551 program (and similar CU550 variants), allowing users to personalize blade finishes, handle materials (including G-10), hardware, and engravings via Benchmade's Custom Knife Builder—elevating the classic Pardue design into bespoke territory
