Sine Metu ("Without Fear") is the Latin motto of the Ukrainian city Lviv (Lwów), appearing on its coat of arms since the 14th century. Granted in 1356 by King Casimir III the Great after Lviv’s founding as a royal city, the phrase symbolizes the city’s historic resilience against invasions, sieges, and occupations

The emblem—a golden lion rampant on blue—paired with "Sine Metu" reflects Lviv’s role as a defiant stronghold in Ruthenian, Polish, Austrian, and later Ukrainian history. During Mongol raids, Cossack uprisings, World Wars, and Soviet rule, the motto embodied unbreakable spirit
