Smith And Wesson K/L frame Round Butt grips
The Smith & Wesson Model 686 is the legendary stainless steel .357 Magnum revolver on the L-frame, renowned for durability, accuracy, and law enforcement popularity
By the late 1970s, S&W's medium K-frame revolvers (Model 19 blued, Model 66 stainless) cracked forcing cones and barrels under sustained full-power .357 Magnum loads. To fix this, S&W engineered the stronger L-frame—beefier top strap, heavier forcing cone, thicker cylinder walls—while retaining K-frame grip size and ergonomics
The blued Model 586 ("Distinguished Combat Magnum") debuted in 1980; the rust-resistant stainless Model 686 followed in 1981 as its mirror image. With 6-shot cylinder, adjustable sights, 4" or 6" barrels (~40 oz), and DA/SA trigger, it handled hot Magnum ammo reliably while shooting mild .38 Special for practice
Quick adoption by police agencies made the 4" 686 a duty staple in the 1980s, before semi-autos dominated. Variants evolved: 686 Plus (1996, 7-shot cylinder), ported barrels, short barrels, and internal locks (post-2001)
Still in production today, the Model 686 endures as a benchmark revolver—versatile for defense, hunting, target shooting—proving S&W's engineering genius in creating the ultimate durable .357 Magnum wheelgun
