Style features
The Roman helmet (galea) evolved over centuries as essential headgear for legionaries, protecting against slashes, thrusts, and projectiles while balancing mobility and visibility. Early Republican helmets (4th–2nd century BC) included the Montefortino (Celtic-influenced, bronze, conical with cheek guards) and Coolus (simpler, riveted bronze)
By the Imperial era (1st century BC–3rd century AD), the iconic Imperial Gallic and Imperial Italic types dominated: iron construction, reinforced brow ridge (to deflect downward strikes), neck guard (for sun/rain protection), hinged cheek pieces, and often a horsehair crest (for rank identification and intimidation). The Coolus persisted into the 1st century AD, while the later Ridge helmet (3rd–5th century AD) featured a two-piece ridged skull and attached neck guard—precursor to medieval designs
Roman helmets were personalized: officers added plumes, visors, or embossed motifs (eagles, gods). Archaeological finds like the Ribchester hoard (Britain) and Kalkriese battlefield (Germany, 9 AD Teutoburg Forest) reveal bronze face masks for cavalry sports (hippika gymnasia). These helmets symbolized Roman military discipline, engineering prowess, and cultural adaptation, influencing European armor for centuries

Why wood, not G10 or micarta?
Wood offers greater comfort, warmth, and aesthetic satisfaction. Wood is lighter and more pleasant to hold. Wooden grips are best suited for customization and hand finishing. Or perhaps made from G10 and micarta. Why not?
