The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), a large crocodilian native to the southeastern United States, has ancient origins dating back over 150 million years, surviving the dinosaur extinction 65 million years ago with minimal evolutionary change for at least 8 million years. Once abundant in swamps, rivers, and marshes from Texas to North Carolina, populations plummeted due to unregulated hunting for hides, meat, and leather in the 19th–20th centuries—millions killed, nearing extinction by the 1960s

Listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 1973 (preceded by 1967 protections), strict bans on hunting, habitat preservation, and farm-raised programs spurred recovery. By 1987, it was delisted from endangered status. Today, over 1 million thrive in the wild (IUCN Least Concern), serving as a keystone species that digs "gator holes" to sustain wetlands during droughts. Males reach 14 feet and 1,000 pounds, females smaller. A true conservation success story of resilience and effective wildlife management
