Style features
The Slavic shield was a key defensive tool for early medieval Slavs (6th–11th centuries), used by warriors from the Baltic to the Balkans. Byzantine sources like Procopius describe South Slavs carrying small, light shields (aspidia) alongside spears and bows, often without heavy armor. Archaeological evidence shows predominantly round or slightly oval wooden boards (flat or convex), made from planks of lime, alder, or poplar, laminated or single-layer
Unlike Viking or Germanic shields, Slavic ones rarely featured metal bosses (only ~30 known finds, mostly Scandinavian imports in coastal areas). Instead, they relied on organic construction: covered in leather (tanned or rawhide), sometimes tarred or painted, with minimal metal for durability and lightness. Rare 11th-century remnants (e.g., Lenzen fortification, Latvia finds) confirm bossless designs ~70 cm in diameter
By the 12th–13th centuries, kite, almond-shaped, and proto-paveza shields appeared in Rus', Poland, and Bohemia, blending European trends. The Slavic shield symbolized resilience against steppe nomads and neighbors, evolving from simple infantry gear to heraldic icons in later Rus' principalities

Why wood, not G10 or micarta?
Wood offers greater comfort, warmth, and aesthetic satisfaction. Wood is lighter and more pleasant to hold. Wooden grips are best suited for customization and hand finishing. Or perhaps made from G10 and micarta. Why not?
