House of the Dragon was created as a prequel series to HBO's Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin's 2018 companion book Fire & Blood. Development began in 2018 when Martin pitched multiple Targaryen-focused stories; showrunner Ryan Condal and co-creator Miguel Sapochnik (Emmy-winning director of "Hardhome" and "Battle of the Bastards") were chosen in 2019 to adapt the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. HBO greenlit the project in October 2019 after Condal's pilot script impressed executives. Filming started in 2021, with the series premiering August 21, 2022. It explores the Targaryen dynasty's peak and downfall, delivering high-stakes drama, dragon battles, and political intrigue that captivated fans and critics alike
