Saint Nicholas (c. 270–343 AD), also known as Nicholas of Myra, was a Greek Christian bishop of Myra (modern-day Demre, Turkey). Famous for his secret gift-giving, kindness to the poor, and miracles, he became the historical inspiration for Santa Claus. Legends include saving three impoverished sisters by providing dowries, resurrecting murdered children, and calming storms. Canonized as a saint, his feast day is December 6. His relics were moved to Bari, Italy in 1087, spreading his veneration worldwide and evolving into the modern Christmas figure
