Sig Sauer P220 DA/SA grips
The Sig Sauer P220 DA/SA is the groundbreaking semi-automatic pistol that launched the iconic SIG P-series and modern SIG Sauer dominance
Developed in 1975 by SIG (Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft) in Switzerland as a cost-effective replacement for the expensive, hand-fitted P210 (Pistole 49), the P220 was adopted that year by the Swiss Army as the Pistole 75 (P75) in 9mm Parabellum
Designed by Walter Ludwig, Hanspeter Sigg, and Eduard Brodbeck, it introduced the innovative SIG Sauer system—a modified Browning tilting-barrel lockup with a lightweight alloy frame, stamped slide for faster/cheaper production, and revolutionary double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger with a frame-mounted decocking lever (no manual safety needed). This DA first-shot capability, combined with a firing pin block, set new standards for safety and speed
Strict Swiss export laws led to the pivotal 1976 partnership with J.P. Sauer & Sohn (Germany), forming SIG Sauer GmbH to enable global sales. The .45 ACP version debuted soon after (around 1976), proving hugely popular in the U.S. market
Early imports arrived as the Browning BDA (1977), followed by full U.S. availability via SIGARMS in 1985. Praised for legendary accuracy, reliability, smooth trigger, and low bore axis, the P220 influenced countless designs
Today, variants like Legion and Carry continue the legacy—proof that the 1975 P220 DA/SA redefined reliable, user-friendly service pistols
