Ruger Mark III 22/45 grips
The Ruger Mark III 22/45 is a popular .22 LR semi-automatic pistol combining the classic Ruger Mark series reliability with a 1911-style grip for training and plinking
The 22/45 concept debuted in 1992 on the Mark II platform: Ruger fitted the proven blowback action with a lightweight Zytel polymer grip frame mimicking the M1911 angle, controls (safety, mag release, slide stop), and feel — ideal for 1911 shooters practicing cheaply
In 2004, Ruger launched the Mark III series (replacing the Mark II), introducing upgrades like a left-side magazine release button, loaded chamber indicator (first for .22 rimfire), internal lock, magazine disconnect, contoured ejection port, and tapered bolt ears
The Mark III 22/45 followed immediately in April 2004, announced as "the most modern .22 pistol ever offered." It retained the 1911 ergonomics while adding Mark III refinements: checkered grip panels, serrated front strap, checkered back strap, and bull barrels (4", 4.5", 5.5", 6.875" options)
Models included blued/stainless variants, fixed/adjustable sights, and later the Hunter (2005) with HiViz fiber-optic front, fluted barrel, and optics-ready top. The Lite variant (2012 SHOT Show) featured an aluminum receiver for reduced weight (~23 oz)
Production ran 2004–2016 (serial prefix 228-), totaling millions across the line, praised for accuracy, durability, and affordability before the Mark IV (2016) simplified takedown
The Mark III 22/45 remains a cult favorite for rimfire training, suppressed use, and competition
