The Colt Mustang Pocketlite was introduced in 1987 as a lightweight evolution of the Colt Mustang pocket pistol line, building on the Colt Government Model .380 (launched 1983) and the standard Mustang (1986)—both scaled-down, single-action .380 ACP semi-autos inspired by the classic M1911 ergonomics but with a different locking system (cam barrel unlock, no grip safety)
To address demand for ultra-concealable carry, Colt developed the Pocketlite with an aluminum alloy frame machined from bar stock (not cast), reducing weight to just 12.5–13 oz unloaded while retaining a 2.75-inch barrel, 6+1 capacity, commander-style hammer, manual thumb safety, and reliable blowback operation. It became Colt's lightest .380 semi-auto, ideal for pocket or ankle carry
The model gained quick popularity in the late 1980s for its balance of size, shootability, and Colt quality, though production ended around 1997 due to manufacturing costs and market shifts. Discontinued originals became collector favorites
In 2011, Colt revived an improved Mustang Pocketlite (announced November 2011, full release 2012) with modern CNC machining, enhanced durability, high-profile sights, and a 2.84-inch barrel—capitalizing on the concealed carry boom. It remains a sought-after .380 ACP pocket 1911-style pistol for enthusiasts and daily carry
