M-LOK fittings
The M-LOK fittings (Modular Lock system) revolutionized firearm accessory mounting, offering a lightweight, flexible alternative to heavy Picatinny rails
Developed by Magpul Industries (founded 1999 by Richard Fitzpatrick), M-LOK evolved from their earlier MOE slot system. In late 2007, Magpul unveiled a prototype elongated slot on the Masada Concept Rifle (later ACR) handguard at SHOT Show—acting as a negative mounting surface for accessories
By 2008–2009, the MOE (Magpul Original Equipment) handguards and slots launched commercially for AR-15/M16 platforms, with millions of compatible accessories sold. However, limitations like "blind" installation, limited positioning, and accessory compatibility drove improvement
From 2007–2014, Magpul refined the design into M-LOK: elongated rectangular slots (different dimensions from MOE), cammed T-nuts for secure, tool-free attachment from the front, half-slot increments for precise placement, and reduced weight/material while maintaining strength
Officially released in 2014 (announced April 2014), Magpul made the M-LOK patent and specs free to license (with trademark use rules), encouraging widespread adoption. This sparked explosive growth—major manufacturers (Geissele, BCM, Daniel Defense, etc.) quickly integrated M-LOK handguards and fittings
Key advantages: lighter builds, better ergonomics, modular customization for AR-15, AR-10, tactical rifles, and hunting setups. A 2016 patent dispute with Gibbz Arms (GAMA system) settled in Magpul's favor, solidifying ownership
Today, M-LOK fittings (rail covers, hand stops, QD mounts, grips) dominate modern rifle platforms—proof of Magpul's innovation in lightweight, user-friendly accessory systems
