The Spyderco Sage 1 (model C142GP) is a landmark folder that introduced one of Spyderco’s most important modern lock mechanisms — the Compression Lock

In the mid-2000s, the wildly successful Paramilitary (2004) proved the strength and safety advantages of the Compression Lock over traditional liner locks. However, it was a large knife. Many users asked for a more compact, refined version

Spyderco responded with the Sage project. The Sage 1 was officially introduced in 2008–2009 (first major deliveries began in 2009). Designed by Sal Glesser, it became the first production knife to feature the Compression Lock in a mid-sized, truly EDC-friendly format

Key characteristics:

  • 3" CPM-S30V full-flat-ground blade
  • Very clean, minimalist titanium handle
  • Skeletonized liners
  • Trademark Round Hole™
  • Reversible four-position pocket clip
  • Outstanding ergonomics and balance

The Sage 1 was immediately recognized as one of the best all-around EDC folders of its time — elegant, strong, smooth, and extremely reliable

Later it gave birth to the whole Sage family (Sage 2, 3, 4, 5, Lightweight, Carbon Fiber, etc.), but the original Sage 1 remains the most important model — the one that truly brought the Compression Lock to the mainstream knife world
